Summer News 2010

Early Childhood
The Universal Pre-Kindergarten classes are completing another successful year. Each class was at capacity with 18 students. Graduation for our preschoolers is June 24, 2010. Our classroom was observed by an outside evaluator utilizing the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale and earned a score of 6.9 out of a possible 7.0. This is an excellent score and we are very proud and encouraged as quality is one of our strategic priorities.

Youth Development
The academic year has been busy; we are proud of what the young people have accomplished. We had seventeen seniors in our after school programs: 15 will be attending college, one is entering the armed forces, and one will not graduate at this time but will continue with his education. Colleges include:
North Carolina Central University, Clark Atlanta, Utica or Buffalo State, MCC, Finger Lakes Community College, Brockport, Virginia State, Bethune Cookman

School-year programs ended with a celebration on June 4. Staff training and preparing for summer camp and summer employment programs has begun. We anticipate a full camp of 160 four to thirteen year olds. Programming will include Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities, swimming, art and music, social/emotional development, literacy, and sports and recreation. We will travel to parks and other sites weekly and serve breakfast, lunch, and a snack each day.

Family Services
Our CASH (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) program assisted over 200 low-income households with free tax preparation and financial literacy during 2010 tax season.
We have completed renovation on one of our housing units (a studio apartment) and have rented it at below market rate to an individual who is looking to build financial stability. Unrestricted funds continue to cover the materials costs of the renovations to these units. We are grateful that volunteers from Peace of Christ Church have provided “manpower” for many hours on one of the properties on Parsells Avenue. Safe, affordable housing is essential to our overall goal of decreasing transiency and building supportive relationships among neighbors.

Disability Services
In addition to regular after school programs, two overnight respite programs were held this spring for the 20 participants in the program. A group of young people also attended the Monroe County Fishing Derby at Powder Mills Park and had a wonderful time.

We received a grant to replace a very old van that we use to transport youth in our Sky is the Limit recreation/respite program for youth with developmental disabilities. The cost of the van exceeds the grant and unrestricted funds will be used to cover the gap and ensure safe, reliable transportation for these youth.
