ROCHESTER, N.Y. (May 13, 2009) –
The Community Place of Greater Rochester, Inc., has appointed the Rev. Marlowe Washington and Alicia V. Velasco to its Board of Directors.
Washington is pastor for the Baber African Methodist Episcopal Church and is active with several organizations focusing on criminal justice issues, including the “Rise Up Rochester,” formed recently from joining Family and Friends of Murdered Children and Victims of Violence with the You Bet I Told campaign.
Washington was recently named 2008 Man of the Year by the Rochester Genesee Valley Club of The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from St. Francis College and a master of divinity from the New York Theological Seminary.
Velasco is volunteer coordinator for ABVI-Goodwill and formerly managed volunteers for the Girl Scouts of Genesee Valley, Inc. She has worked with numerous other Rochester area organizations recruiting, training and retaining volunteers, with a particular emphasis on programs for girls from underserved neighborhoods.
Velasco holds an M.A. in public administration and a B. A. in sociology, both from the State University of New York College at Brockport.
