ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 8, 2007)- The Rochester Step-Off Educational Foundation (RSO) and The Community Place of Greater Rochester (CPGR) are sponsoring the annual “Peace in Our Streets” Step Event on Monday, January 15 th, at 5:00 p.m. All proceeds from the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day step competition will go to RSO’s Scholarship Fund which awards college scholarships to program participants annually. The event will take place at the Dome Center in Henrietta, NY ( 2695 East Henrietta Road). Last year the event drew more than 1,000 spectators.
The event will feature approximately 15 step teams from many city and suburban schools as well as church and community groups, as well as a few additional youth performances. Admission is $5.00 or $4.00 with a canned good item (all canned goods will be donated to the Henrietta Food Cupboard).
The Rochester Step-Off Educational Foundation, formed in 1994, aims to reduce barriers that impede success in high school and encourage the pursuit of a college education. To do this, the foundation creates opportunities for self-development and cultural enhancement, develops partnerships with community agencies, and places a strong emphasis on academic improvement, public service, and physical conditioning. Rochester Step-Off is a distinctive program with a proven record of success: to date over $180,000 has been awarded to Rochester’s youth, and every year more than 600 students and hundreds of volunteers participate in the program. The Community Place of Greater Rochester, Inc. is a nonprofit human services agency that provides a variety of programs and services to individuals, families, children, the aging, and the developmentally disabled living in the northeast sector of the city and throughout the greater Rochester area.
