Barber Shop, Part of Community Economic Development Program, Celebrates Grand Opening

ROCHESTER , N.Y. (November 9, 2007) – On Saturday, November 10, Benjamin’s Barber Shop ( 441 Parsells Avenue) will hold a grand opening celebration from 12 until 8 p.m. The shop is the second business to be incubated in the economic development branch of The Community Place of Greater Rochester’s HOST (Housing Opportunities for Sustainability and Transition) Program. The celebration will include food and activities, and all are welcome.

Robert Benjamin, the shop’s owner, is an active community leader who is one of the organizers of the My Community Is Your Community Event, an annual community-building event in the northeast sector of the city. He says that the business will do its part to be a responsible community asset, encourage nonviolence and positive youth development, and help build the economic stability of the neighborhood.

The Community Place’s HOST Program, started in 2002, focuses on stabilizing neighborhoods by reducing transience and improving the financial wellbeing of residents. The program’s economic development branch incubates small businesses in the city to improve the overall economy of the city. This year the program was awarded the prestigious United Neighborhood Centers of America/Annie E. Casey Foundation Family Strengthening Award, a national award given to nonprofits with innovative, effective programs that strengthen communities and the families and children who live in them.

The Community Place of Greater Rochester, Inc. is a nonprofit provider of neighborhood-based human services that offers a variety of programs and services to individuals, families, children, the aging, and the developmentally disabled living in the greater Rochester area. The Community Place was formed from the merger of the former Lewis Street Center, Genesee Settlement House, and Eastside Community Center. 2007 marks The Community Place’s centennial.
