My Community is Our Community Event To Bring
Together Residents from Northeast Sector of City

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 6, 2007)- On Saturday, September 8th, residents of northeast Rochester, in conjunction with The Community Place of Greater Rochester and the City of Rochester, will host the second annual My Community is Our Community event. The event, which is also supported by the Rochester City School District, WDKX, Families and Friends of Murdered Children and Victims of Violence, and the Rochester Housing Authority, will run from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the First Street Recreation Center. Entertainment and activities, health awareness and violence prevention presentations and booths, and free food and giveaways will highlight the event.

Last year’s inaugural event brought together hundreds of northeast city residents for a day of food, fun, and community building. The event was planned by a group of men living in the northeast sector fed up with the violence and other social ills plaguing the city. They decided to hold an event that would bring the community together and improve neighborhood cohesion and communication, two factors important in the fight against the social problems the area faces. It is a grassroots effort conceived and planned by community members with the support of The Community Place, the City of Rochester, and the other sponsors. The event also has the support of many small businesses in the area, including: All City Clothing Store, American Grocery Store, Benjamin’s Barbershop, Carlos Grocery Store, Central Park Café, Hoodstock, Rivera’s Grocery Store, Soul Food House Restaurant, and Spotlight Barbershop.

The Community Place of Greater Rochester, Inc. is a nonprofit provider of neighborhood-based human services that offers a variety of programs and services to individuals, families, children, the aging, and the developmentally disabled living in the greater Rochester area. CPGR was formed from the merger of the former Lewis Street Center, Genesee Settlement House, and Eastside Community Center. 2007 marks The Community Place’s centennial.
